
Centre for Tactics and Strategic Studies (CTSS) (Erstwhile Tactical Wing) came into existence on 18th September 1967, with the aim to impart advanced training in tactics and border management to officers and subordinate officers of BSF. The first in-service course, namely, Company and Platoon Commanders’ Course, Serial - I, was conducted from 18 Sept to 23 Dec 1967 in the Shantivan area of the Academy.
The CTSS of BSF Academy has come a long way since its inception and has the unique distinction of having trained officers, SOs and men from State Police organizations, CAPF (Paramilitary) Organizations, Army and also from border guarding forces of Nepal, Afghanistan, Ghana, Swaziland, Kenya, Mongolia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sierra Leone besides BSF. Following are vision and mission of CTSS:-
CTSS of BSF Academy conducts not only the mandatory in-service courses, but also seminars and workshops on contemporary professional issues. Below appended courses are conducted at CTSS Wing.
(Duration- one week)
This is a mandatory Course for promotion to the rank of Deputy Inspector General. The course is aimed to enable senior Officers of BSF (i.e. Commandants) to think at policy level and conceptualize operational and management issues at higher levels. Phase – I of this course is conducted at CTSS Wing.
The Course is conducted to train Battalion Second in Commands of the Force in efficient handling of a Battalion during various operational scenarios. The duration of the course is 08 weeks. It is a mandatory course for promotion to the rank of Commandant.
The course aims to train the Deputy Commandants of the Force for the duties of Second in Command and to prepare them for other higher assignments. The duration of the Course is of 08 weeks. It is a mandatory course for promotion to the rank of 2IC.
The course is conducted to bring in attitudinal change among promotee officers of the rank of Assistant Commandants for better handling of a company. The duration of the course is of 6 weeks. It is a mandatory course for promotion to the rank of Deputy Commandant.
This is a mandatory Course for Assistant Commandants for promotion to the rank of Deputy Commandant. The course aims to train young officers of the Force to carry out small team operations and to become effective Coy Commanders. The duration of the course is of 10 weeks.
The course is designed to train Mongolian Border Protection Police Officials in English language, Border Management in difficult terrain and special operations including developing them as trainers. The duration of the courses varies from 5 weeks to 3 months.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMME FOR MONGOLIAN POLICE OFFICIALS
To train Mongolian Border Protection Police Officials in English language i.e reading, writing and speaking. The duration of the course is 3 months.
The course is conducted to sensitize the CMOs of the Force about the latest environmental problems, difficulties, changes and man management problems of the Force and upgrade their professional knowledge for management of hospitals. The course is conducted in two modules. ABM module of 02 weeks duration is conducted at BSF Academy.
This Course is designed to develop mutual understanding between the two Border Guarding Forces with a view to improve Management of Indo - Bangladesh Border. This Course was initially started in Feb 2014 and it provides a great forum for Officers of both the Forces to share views on border management and related aspects.
The CTSS Win is headed by an officer of the rank of Inspector General who is assisted by a team of DIsG, Commandants, Second-in-Commands, Deputy Commandants, Assistant Commandants and other subordinate staff. The Officers posted to the wings are also associated with various indoor and outdoor activities of the courses. Guest faculty and eminent speakers are also invited to share their views on contemporary professional issues. The Commando School of BSF Academy functions under CTSS. It was established in 1966 with the aim to train personnel (all ranks) of BSF to carry out small team operations. Later, the intake included CRPF, SSB, Air Force, Assam Rifles and other State Police Organizations. This School trains officers and subordinates and provides quality training in the field of small team operations. The methodology and quality of training at Commando School has earned it the award of “CENTER OF EXCELLENCE’’ during 2003 by MHA. The School has trained more than 6000 personnel from various organizations.
Instructional objectives of Commando Training: -
CTSS has also entrusted responsibility to conduct Inter Frontier Commando Competition in every year and CTSS is selecting Seema Prahari for All India Police Commando Competition (AIPCC). A highly qualified team of BSF officers, SOs is being deputed to train seema prahari for various events of AIPCC.
