ABOUT CIATS

Anti-Naxal operations is a challenging role BSF has been assigned in two critically Naxal-infested Chhattisgarh and Odisha States. But more challenging is changing over from border role to Anti-Naxal role. It requires thorough planning and systematic grooming of entire unit to be deployed for this sensitive task. Initially ‘Group Training” for teams from earmarked unit and an Army unit was organized at either CIJW at Vairengte (Mizoram) or CBS (Corps Battle School) at Sarol (J&K) and the jointly trained teams in turn trained entire unit to get organized and prepared for Anti-Naxal operations.

This arrangement worked well a while, but it did not deliver desired results as the units trained so suffered set-backs in operations. Therefore, the training module was changed by organizing training in-house at TC&S Hazaribagh for a nucleus group from earmarked unit, which in turn imparted training to all personnel of the unit. Subsequently this system also didn’t work out well as TC&S could not take additional load of training core teams of the units.

Gradually necessity was also felt to set up an exclusive training institute to meet the requirements of Pre-induction training for earmarked units, thus CIATS (Counter Insurgency and Anti Terrorism School) took shape on adhoc basis at Karahalli and it began to impart training from Feb 2018 onwards.Karahalli is located in ideal surroundings of Jungle about 34 kms from STC, Yelahanka. Natural Green cover provided befitting environment for Anti –Naxal Training.

At the inception, the CIATS conducted training for GTUT (Group Training of Unit Team), later on with development of infrastructure and resources; the CIATS has set out to organize training for entire unit to be deployed on ANO.

The aim and objectives of CIATS are defined as follows:-

AIM

To prepare the battalions designated for Anti-Naxal Operations for effective deployment and conduct of result oriented operations efficiently.

Objectives:-

  • Establish Centre of excellence for training CI Ops and AN Ops.
  • Conduct PIT for BSF units.
  • Provide realistic training.
  • Constantly upgrade the training to cope with latest techniques and tactics.
  • Train commando teams or Small action teams.
  • Be a data Centre for CI and Anti Naxal Ops.
  • Conduct short team Trg for officer and instructors of CAPFs

CIATS is designated to organize training:-

  • PIT for BSF Units.
  • CDO and SAT for Ops.
  • Refresher training.
  • Training of trainees of other establishments in tactics.

The institute has trained as many as 5770 men which include Officers, SOs and ORs for anti-naxal operations since its inception. Besides, pre-induction training basically designed for the units being deployed on ANO, it undertakes training of Commandos or Small Action Teams for crack actions against naxals. Ever since PIT has begun at CIATS, the operational capabilities of the battalions have improved and no major set-backs have been experienced by the Force.
