IRLA No. 1616 Shri N S Dalal, AC of 40 Bn BSF attainedmartyrdom on 24 April 1972 at Delta Counter Sauji (J&K)during Indo-Pak offensive operation. Born on 12 April 1943,Shri N S Dalal, AC joined BSF on 8 Jan’1971. On 24 April 1972 at 1430 hrs, Shri N S Dalal, AC was ordered tolead a platoon patrol to DELTA counter to prevent any intrusionby the enemy in own area.When the leading elements of thepatrol were 50 yards short of DELTA Counter, it came undervery heavy MMG, Mor, LMG Fire from three directions.Thecomplete patrol was held up.It was not possible to withdrawor move forward due to intense enemy fire.Shri N S Dalal, ACtook the LMG himself and moved forward and opened fire onthe enemy MMG post from which direct fire was coming onthe patrol.He simultaneously directed his men to withdraw.Hesilenced the enemy MMG by his LMG fire, but suddenly the enemy fired MMG burst - fire from another direction and Shri NS Dalal got hit on his right thigh.In spite of severe injuries, profusely bleeding, he kept the enemy engaged without regardto his own life and safety, till his men moved to the alternativeposition under his covering fire.He kept the enemy engaged tillhe become unconscious.It was due to this courageous actionof Shri.N S Dalal AC that the men were saved when the wholepatrol would have been annihilated.Shri N S Dalal AC by hiscourageous leadership saved the life of 30 of his comrades. His sacrifice has been recognized by Govt.of India by awardinghim “Veer Chakra”(Posthumously). His next of Kin SmtDalip Kaur(wife) resides at H.No.168, Jhanj Colony, Rohtak, Distt - Rohtak, Haryana.
