IRLA No. 623 Shri Inderjit Singh Uppal, DC of 78 Bn BSFattained martyrdom on the night of 20 Nov 1971 at Raiganjwhile performing IB duty. Born on 1 Jan 1939 Shri Inderjit Singh Uppal joined BSF on 8 June 1967.Unit was tasked to capture North bank of Phulkumari River near, Raiganj.Two Coys left their location at AndharijharKhamar at 0001 hrs on the intervening night of 19 / 20 Nov 1971 and occupiedpostion on the bank of Phulkumarireiver.A fierce battle occurred between the enemy and our force, the enemny bunkers werevery heavily fortified.The BSF had a tough time to dislodge the enemy.During this Battle DyComdt Shri Indrajeet Singh Uppalsustained injury from enemy MMG fire and breathed his last. Raiganj was occupied on 21 Nov 1971 by BSF.His sacrifice has been recognized by Govt of India by awardinghim “Vir Chakra”(Posthumously).
