NaikChanan Singh was Commanding a section of a Battalion of the Border Security Force in the screen position in an area in the Western Sector, during the recent conflict with Pakistan. On the 3rd and 4th December, 1971, the enemy launched seven attack against this position in overwhelming strength, supported by heavy artillery fire. In the first attack, he came out of his bunker with utter disregard to his safety and fired on the enemy from point blank range inflicting heavy casualties. His action inspired his men who fought courageously and repulsed the attack. Subsequently, the enemy launched six further attacked on the post and subjected to inenseshellilng, but under the inspiring leadership of NaikChanan Singh all the attacks were repulsed. Throughout, NaikChanan Singh displayed courage, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order
