Assistant Commandant Anurag Kumar was the commander of a team which was leading the search of a thickly wooded area in rugged mountainous terrain.At around 0800 hours on 06 October, 2007 his team came under heavy automatic fire from a group of heavily armed terrorists.Assistant Commandant Anurag Kumar sustained gunshot wound to his stomach in the first volley of bullets.In a daredevil action, he returned the fire of the terrorists ferociously.He realised that his team was in a tactically disadvantageous position.Unmindful of his personal safety, disregarding his injuries decided to take the fire fight into the terrorists hiding place.Reorganising his team for covering fire, Assistant Commandant Anurag Kumar crawled to a flank over treachrous ground and under heavy fire from terrorists.He lobbed a grenade and charged at the terrorists who were bewildered from this onslaught from a different direction.In literally hand to hand and close quarter battel, Assistant Commandant Anurag Kumar shot dead two hard core foreign terrorists.He refused to be evacuated even thereafter till the successful culmination of operation.Assistant Commandant Anurag Kumar displayed leadership in the face of extremely adverse conditions and conspicuous gallantry, beyond the call of duty.
