IRLA No 18430431 Shri V P Purohit, Kirti Chakra, PPMGComdt of 171 Bn BSF attained martyrdom on 2 Aug 2002 atMalpuraDistt-Budgam (J&K) while performing CI duty. Born on 28 Dec 1958, Shri V P Purohit, joined BSF on 17 Sept 1984On 2 Aug 2002 at about 1230 hrs Shri V P Purohit, Comdt. 171Bn BSF received some specific information about the presenceof militants in a house located in Vill - Malpora, PS - Charare - e - Sharif, Badgaon and planned an operation with Shri Ved Singh, 2IC of 10 Bn BSF and Shri O P Sharma, AC 171 Bn BSF. After laying outer and inner cordon of the suspected house, theoperation was launched.When the QRT led by Shri V P Purohit, Comdt.reached near the target house, militants inside the houseopened heavy volume of fire on the party.During encounte ShriV P Purohit, Comdt.sustained bullet injuries in his leftthigh.He with disregard to his personal safety and despite havinggrievous injuries heroically killed one militant single handedlyand caught hold of the barrel of the rifle of another militant whowas trying to fire at his chest.Later he succumbed to the injuriesduring evacuation. His sacrifice has been recognized by the Govt.of India byawarding him “KirtiChakara” (Posthumously).The officer wasalso awarded PPMG(Posthumously) during the year 2000 foranti - militant operation. His next of kin Smt Nirmala Devi(wife) resides at Vill - Sambhori, PO - Sajkot, Distt - Chamoli, Uttarakhand.
